i went for a new PR by 25 lb.. then by another 10 making a trap bar lift at 310 lbs...

i used the idea of retard strength and to be honest it felt lighter then when i did 275 2 weeks earlier...

i could have gone for more but there is always next time :-)

so i do believe.. to a point.. if your mind knows you can do it, your body will do it

Yes, I do. That's the whole part about "having control" over your psychological state of mind. It starts with having a concrete goal, a template to follow, and picking exercises that work for you that day AND get you closer to your goal.

I think geting IN to the frame of mind just comes from enjoying what you're doing in the gym and looking forward to going every day. As far as staying in that frame of mind, you normally tend to see it slip once you're physically exhausted. About that same time is when you will start to notice that your biofeedback testing is telling you the same thing.

do you seem to think there is a strategy of getting into the mindset?

do you seem to think there is a time frame of how long to get into/stay in the mind set?

or it is much mroe simple of just being confident in general?

@Matt
Thanks again! I'll keep writing as long as people keep reading. ;)

@Adam
Ah-ha! Now I get it and understand what you were saying in your first comment as well. Thanks for elaborating.

Your post does a good job of pointing out that thinking can interfere with performance. This is counter-intuitive, because in most aspects of life, many problems can be avoided with a little thought. The optimum state for performance...which you are looking to maximize, occurs when thinking does not interfere with or dominate performance, but the two work together seamlessly.

Long way of saying...the post first reminded me of the first sentence in my comment, but you built from there in a way that made sense and reminded me of discussions about flow or being in the zone.
